Tennis total games: counting the score

A games total compares the relevant game count with a stated line, such as 22.5.

Worked example

A completed 6–4, 7–6 match contains 23 games. Over 22.5 wins and under 22.5 loses in this simple completed-match example. The points played inside the tiebreak are not added individually to the ordinary set score.

Whole and half lines

At a half-game line there is no equality with an integer game count. A whole-game line can land exactly on the total; check the contract for the resulting refund or other treatment. Do not silently replace 23 with 23.5 when comparing prices.

Match format changes the comparison

Best-of-three and best-of-five matches have different possible lengths. Short sets, match tiebreaks and incomplete matches require special attention. The competition scoring rules and the bookmaker’s counting rules both matter.
