Tennis retirement and walkover: questions before comparing odds

A competition result and the settlement of a bet can be different records.

Retirement versus no start

Record whether play started, whether the match was completed and what the official result states. A walkover and a retirement after several games are not interchangeable events.

Questions for the contract

Does settlement require a completed match or a particular amount of play? Does the rule differ for match winner, set winner, total games and handicap? Are already determined markets treated separately? Keep the exact operator answer and source date.

Do not fill gaps by analogy

One bookmaker’s rule is not evidence for another, and a previous tournament case may involve a different market. When the recorded data lack settlement conditions, the comparison must state that the condition is unknown.

Three records to compare after a retirement

Consider a hypothetical match that stops with A leading 6–4, 2–1. The match-winner contract, a first-set contract already completed and a full-match total may each have a different treatment. A sporting result alone does not tell you which bets stand or are void.

Save the market wording, the version of the operator’s rule and the official match status. If the bet is part of an accumulator, also check what a void selection does to the remaining price. Avoid extending a rule from one bookmaker to another, or from ordinary tennis to a different format.
